The use of virtual learning environments has been introduced to schools for a long time, however, in recent years due to the confinement due to the COVID19 pandemic in 2020, higher education (and at all levels educational) suffered a change too fast and therefore the use of these virtual platforms was accelerated to comply with the confinement regulations implemented by the governments of the world. For this reason, the implementation of the online preparatory course to enter engineering and level their (...) knowledge, considering the previous situation, becomes significant as it impacts the training of the engineer. To apply the online propaedeutic course, a survey was carried out before and after it in Google Form with the aim of knowing the perception of the use of this modality of the course. What led to relate what was specified in other studies where it is expressed that today's youth are digital natives, but without a doubt we are also sociable by nature, so we need to interact to learn and relate, which requires the intervention and guidance of a teacher. Certification of banana plantations is widely used as a device for protecting and improving socio-economic conditions of wageworkers, including their incomes, working conditions and—increasingly—voice [related to labour relations and workplace representation]. However, to date, evidence about the effectiveness of certification in these domains is scarce. We collected detailed field data on economic benefits for improving household income, social benefits for labour practices, and the voice of wageworkers focusing on identity and identification issues amongst wageworkers at Fairtrade certified banana plantations and (...) comparable, non-certified plantations in the Dominican Republic. We used different types of regression models to identify significant relationships. Econometrical analysis of survey results complemented by field observations and outcomes from in-depth stakeholder interviews indicate that the impact of Fairtrade certification on wageworkers’ economic benefits is rather limited. However, the impact on the voice of wageworkers, is more evident. On Fairtrade certified plantations workers are more satisfied with the course of life and better represented. Thus while the additional value of Fairtrade certification on primary wages seems limited, Fairtrade has relevant positive effects on the labour force, particularly by delivering in-kind benefits, offering a sense of job-security, improving voice and enabling private savings. Benefits of certification, but also other interventions with a similar purpose, might therefore not be discerned in terms of economic benefits such as wages or basic labour conditions that are under direct control of national law, but they should be identified in terms of social benefits and improved norms of conduct for wageworker engagement. Una de las organizaciones de la sociedad civil que ha adquirido gran relevancia en el combate a la pobreza alimentaria en el estado de Sonora es el Banco de Alimentos de Hermosillo (BAH). Su objetivo es combatir el hambre y la desnutrición mediante la distribución de alimentos a zonas marginadas. Pesqueira, es una de las localidades en situación crítica de pobreza alimentaria y que ha sido beneficiada por los apoyos que otorga el BAH. Sin embargo, a pesar de que esos (...) apoyos son reconocidos como una ayuda importante en términos de asistencia alimentaria, se desconoce objetivamente su impacto nutricional y económico. La metodología consistió en la tipificación de las canastas alimentarias (CA) durante un periodo de cuatro meses para contrastar su aporte nutricional y su valor en el mercado. Los resultados son los siguientes: de acuerdo a la composición nutrimental de la CA, es posible observar que sólo cubre el 20% de la ingestión diaria recomendada. En términos económicos, las CA han contribuido a que la población beneficiaria reduzca sus niveles de pobreza alimentaria en un 40%, aunque persiste la pobreza en términos absolutos. (shrink)

We respond in this paper to various counter arguments advanced against our stance on conscientious objection accommodation. Contra Maclure and Dumont, we show that it is impossible to develop reliable tests for conscientious objectors' claims with regard to the reasonableness of the ideological basis of their convictions, and, indeed, with regard to whether they actually hold they views they claim to hold. We demonstrate furthermore that, within the Canadian legal context, the refusal to accommodate conscientious objectors would not constitute undue (...) hardship for such objectors. We reject concerns that refusing to accommodate conscientious objectors would limit the equality of opportunity for budding professionals holding particular ideological positions. We also clarify various misrepresentations of our views by respondents Symons, Glick and Jotkowitz, and Lyus. (shrink)

To what extend do the standard tests for realism, say in the philosophy of mind, apply to the social sciences?

La complejidad de una enfermedad terminal pone en evidencia la vulnerabilidad del ser humano ante el dolor y el sufrimiento, y acentúa la crisis subjetiva que acompaña no solo al paciente, sino también al médico que lo asiste. Revisamos la propuesta de un estudio posicionado en la ética del cuidado de quienes necesitan atención integral en el final de la vida. Nos referimos a la investigación titulada “Final de vida, cuidados paliativos y empatía. Manejo de la empatía como recurso fundamental (...) frente a la toma de decisiones al final de la vida” (1). Un extracto de dicho trabajo señala la importancia de que los médicos puedan ubicar el sufrimiento del paciente separado de ellos mismos, de manera que sostengan una resonancia empática que los posicione con capacidad para entrar en el mundo del paciente y su enfermedad, con firmeza personal y profesional. Definimos un espacio de reflexión acerca del sentido del sufrimiento, su correlato en la práctica clínica y un argumento fundamental al momento de proponer una legislación vinculada al final de la vida. Does 'Person P tried to A' entail that there is some particular, whether a mental act or a brain state or whatever, that is a trying? Most discussions of trying assume that this entailment holds. There is no good reason for holding that this is a valid inference. In particular, I examine one 'Davidsonian' argument that might be used to justify the validity of such an inference and argue that the argument is not sound. This paper focuses on two prominent arguments claiming that physicalism entails reductionism. One is Kim’s causal exclusion argument (CEA), and the other is Papineau’s causal argument. The paper argues that Kim’s CEA is not logically valid and that it is driven by two implausible justifications. One is “Edward’s dictum”, which is alien to non-reductive physicalism and should be rejected. The other is by endorsement of Papineau’s conception of the physical, immanent in Papineau’s causal argument. This argument only arrives at the (...) physical property-property identities by using a conception of the physical that licenses anything to be reductively physical, including putative core anti-physical entities; thus, leaving Papineau’s causal argument and Kim’s CEA without a reductive physicalist conclusion of philosophical interest. El artículo propone analizar algunos de los usos y relaciones que se establecen entre las nociones de norma y normatividad, tomadas en un sentido amplio, con los problemas tanto básicos como “aplicados” en el campo psicoeducativo. Para ello, se intentará una aproximación desde una perspectiva crítica y en el marco de los Enfoques Socio Culturales en psicología del desarrollo y educacional. La hipótesis de partida es que la psicología del desarrollo, abordada desde estos enfoques, y aún con mayor fuerza la (...) psicología educacional, poseen un ineludible componente normativo consistente con la caracterización de las prácticas pedagógicas como prácticas de gobierno del desarrollo, como prácticas que producen ciertos cursos de desarrollo subjetivo. Se procurará mostrar cómo la cuestión de lo normativo se imbrica, a su vez, con cuestiones básicas de la explicación del desarrollo. (shrink)

Anticipating Mikhail Bakhtin’s appreciation for the unfinalizability of Fedor Dostoevskij’s universe, prominent Protestant theologian Karl Barth celebrates the Russian novelist’s presentation of “the impenetrable ambiguity of human life” characteristic of both the ending of Dostoevsky’s novels and Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. Barth’s unique reading of The Brothers Karamazov not only demonstrates the barrenness of the “theocratic dream” but also complements Bakhtin’s discussion of polyphony with an explicitly theological dimension by focusing on the dialogue between Creator and the created. El presente escrito quiere poner de presente algunos problemas referentes al testimonio: la veracidad del testimonio, la comparación del conocimiento metódico y científico y el conocimiento del testimonio, la imposibilidad de representar lo irrepresentable después de Auschwitz y la apuesta por mantener la memoria a pesar de la incapacidad que existe para representar lo ocurrido en los campos de concentración. Estos problemas van a ser tratados por medio de la poesía de Celan, quien habla y da su testimonio con motivos (...) de preservar la memoria, sin pretensiones de verdad y de representar lo irrepresentable, en contra del olvido y las representaciones artísticas sin límites; y por medio de la apuesta de Derrida porque nadie puede testimoniar por otro. Bajo la forma de la retórica, la persuasión estuvo presente ya en la antigüedad como un ámbito significativo de la reflexión filosófica. Estamos hablando de un asunto de largos antecedentes y con una rica biografía, que tiene un momento privilegiado en la Atenas de Pericles con la participación de los sofistas. Asistimos al nacimiento de la retórica, el arte de persuadir, y observamos la aparición de sus primeros maestros. El dato clave, y a la vez olvidado, es que la retórica (...) surge para dar respuesta a una situación en la que reina la indefinición. Muchos reclaman derechos, pero nadie está en condiciones de trazar una línea que separe lo legítimo de lo ilegítimo. Se trata de una situación sin una legalidad reconocida y aceptada. La retórica es ahora la herramienta para abrir un surco en un terreno dispuesto para múltiples oportunidades. (shrink)

La “ética del discurso” elaborada por Karl-Otto Apel representa una propuesta de “fundamentación” ética en la que se procura una “transformación” de la ética kantiana mediante dos recursos principales: el pasaje de la perspectiva monológica a la dialógica, y la superación del “rigorismo”. Se mantiene, sin embargo, en la línea kantiana, en el sentido del apriorismo universalista. La fundamentación se hace en el marco de una “reflexión pragmático-trascendental” y consiste en mostrar el “principio del discurso” o la “norma básica” como (...) condición de posibilidad de toda argumentación. Ese principio se expresa como exigencia de que todos los conflictos de intereses sean resueltos por medio de “discursos prácticos”. Lo característico —y, a la vez, el aporte original de Apel— es el reconocimiento de que un principio suficientemente fundamentado puede no ser aplicable en determinadas situaciones. Esto determina la necesidad de una “parte B” de la ética, en la que Apel indaga las condiciones de posibilidad de la aplicación. El presente trabajo concluye con el deslinde de algunas cuestiones que quedan “pendientes” en la ética de Apel, aunque también con la aclaración de que en el balance general pesan más los aportes que los problemas pendientes. This paper relates the concept of “discourse” (in the discourse-ethics’ meaning) with the concept of “social justice.” I maintain that the social nature of reason is a condition of possibility of such justice. According to the Alexy-Habermas system, the rules for the practical discourse mean in their third level the conditions of symmetry, that is, the absence of privileges among the participants. My paper introduces the concept of discursive fairness, referred to the requirements for maintaining the discursive symmetry, even under (...) circumstances of non-discursive, but real asymmetry. Two principles of discursive fairness are offered (by analogy to Rawls’ “principles of justice”): 1. equality of rights among the participants in the practical discourse, and 2. possibility of reviewing all arguments used in the discourse, together with guarantees of benefits for the unsuccessful participants.
